Calligraphy is a process of creating beautiful inscriptions. Each piece created with this process exudes harmony and integrity with a sprinkle of ancestry.
Incorporate that feeling into your logo design today. Take a peek at our top picks for calligraphy logo designs below and stand out amongst the competition.
Calligraphy’s Origins
Calligraphy wasn’t officially a word until the invention of the printing press in the middle of the 15th century. But the origins of the art itself come from China.
During the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE), the expectations for writing were equal. Men and women had to be proficient in using brushes to write. But the Western influence on calligraphy originated in 1200 BC; Phoenicia.
Greeks and Romans adapted Phoenicia into their writing systems like Imperial Capitals, Rustic capitals, Square capitals, and Uncial and Artificial uncial. The first three were for manuscripts in general, while the early Christian church used the latter.
Later into the 12th to 15th centuries, Gothic and Caroline scripts came to life. Caroline Minuscules, Gothic Capitals, Bastard Secretary, and Textura Quadrata.
Later, research shows that the foundation of calligraphy may have been based on Edward Johnston’s Foundational Hand. Though, the book itself may also trace back to the works of Ramsey Psalter.
Psalter created English Caroline Minuscule and the Anglicized version of Frankish Caroline Minuscule. Though, at some point, calligraphy disappeared for a while. It was revived during England’s Arts and crafts movements and has finally become digitized.
